Ximen Qing (西门庆) hosts a lively fundraising birthday feast to repair a temple. Ying Bojie (应伯爵) banters and keeps the company amused. Entertainers and singers arrive. The blind singer Yu Dajie (玉大姐) is lodged in Sun Xue'e's (孙雪娥) room out of pity. Later that night Ximen Qing, drunk and stumbling into the dark chamber, mistakes the blind singer for the room's mistress. In the confusion the two become entangled. When Sun Xue'e returns she angrily expels Yu Dajie. She then tends the drunken Ximen Qing with a forceful household massage. He is grateful and promises to provide her with an attendant. The main-day banquet grows louder. The singer Zheng Aiyue (郑爱月) is late and must be fetched at Ximen Qing's order. Women from the neighboring households assemble at Wu Yueniang's (吴月娘) house where rivalries surface. Pan Jinlian (潘金莲) envies Zheng Aiyue's beauty and openly taunts the newcomer. Ying Bojie cajoles the performers to sing again. Meanwhile business matters arise. Ying introduces a clerk named Gan Chusheng (甘出身) who joins Ximen Qing in a silk partnership. A contract is made and a celebratory feast follows. Pan Jinlian grows resentful of Ximen Qing's attention to others. She conspires with Meng Yulou (孟玉楼) and others to ply Sun Xue'e with drink. Sun becomes intoxicated and returns home humiliated. In the household tempers flare. Pan beats and whips the maid Qiuju (秋菊). Li Ping'er (李瓶儿) and others plead for mercy and seek help from neighbors. They arrange charitable offerings of sutras to calm anxieties. A mirror grinder appears at the gate. He tells a melancholy tale and receives rice and preserved meat. Observers liken the polished mirror to a call for self reflection. Han Daoguo (韩道国) later comes to settle accounts with Ximen Qing. New clerks and shop arrangements are noted. The episodes weave together revelry, jealousy, business deals and domestic cruelty. The household alternates between performance and conflict. The tone shifts from boisterous celebration to private scheming and moral unease.
