The episodes trace escalating troubles around Ximen Qing (西门庆) and his household. Li Guijie (李桂姐) is implicated through her link with Wang Sanguan (王三官) and a complaint reaches Marshal Zhu Taiwei (朱太尉) in the capital. County officers arrive at the Lichun Brothel (立春院) and arrest Wang and several companions. Li Guijie slips away and in desperation seeks refuge at Ximen Qing's house. She kneels before Wu Yue-niang (吴月娘) and the senior women and begs for shelter. Ximen Qing pretends indifference but sends Lai Bao (来保) at once to the capital to press appeals through connections. The county magistrate explains that the matter comes from the Dali Temple (大理寺) and cannot be settled locally. To protect her, Li Guijie is hidden inside the mansion. Daily life in the house continues amid anxiety. Servants scramble to answer letters and accept gifts. A book boy is beaten and hurried to draft a reply. Food boxes and ceremonial presents arrive and are handled with delicate calculation. Ximen Qing grows more reckless. After taking a tonic given by a monk named Hu Seng (胡僧) he becomes voracious. He leads Li Guijie to a grotto in Cangchun Wu (藏春坞) where they lie together on a low bed. She fears exposure and worries about her future if discovered. Ying Bojue (应伯爵) bursts in at one point, teases and kisses Li Guijie, and causes embarrassment before being sent away. While Ximen Qing worries over guests and household expenses, other women seize opportunities. Pan Jinlian (潘金莲) arranges a feast and flirts with Chen Jingji. Li Ping'er (李瓶儿) and others watch. At times Li Guijie sings mournful songs on her pipa and her music moves listeners. The house thus becomes a stage where official pressure, money troubles and private debauchery intersect. Small quarrels, stolen goods and arrests reveal a wider web of debts and favors. The episodes show both human pity and petty cruelty. They expose a world of power, appetite and farce behind the daily rituals of a wealthy household.
