Ximen Qing (西门庆) pursues influence and indulgence. He begins by hosting Dong Jiao'er (董娇儿) and entertaining Cai Zhuangyuan (蔡状元). When Dong Jiao'er complains about poor pay, Ximen and Wu Yueniang (吴月娘) compensate her. Ximen then lavishes gifts and asks Cai to intercede with Song Yushi (宋御史) and other officials. Gifts and bribes follow. The case of Miao Qing (苗青) is hurriedly resolved. The murder of Miao Tianxiu (苗天秀) is effectively closed. Ximen treats the expense as an investment in connections. He next visits Yongfu Temple (永福寺) to inspect the place and offer donations. The abbot describes the temple's decay and the old benefaction by Zhou Shoubu (周守备). A striking foreign monk from Tianzhu (天竺) appears. The monk claims to make medicines. Ximen brings the monk back and secures him with Dai'an (玳安). The monk gives a vial of pills and a small ointment. He refuses money and accepts a robe and he warns against overuse. Ximen tests the pills at a birthday feast hosted by Wang Liu (王六) for Li Jiao'er (李娇儿). After swallowing a pill he feels renewed vigor. He speaks openly of sending men to trade in Yangzhou and Huzhou. Dai'an runs errands all day and in his absence he causes trouble. He quarrels with a bookboy and later forces a visit to Lu Changtui (鲁长腿)'s brothel. There he finds Jin'er (金儿) and Sai'er (赛儿) forced to entertain customers. Ximen later forces intimacy on Li Ping'er (李瓶儿) despite her weakness. Pan Jinlian (潘金莲) grows jealous and sows discord by accusing Li Ping'er of slandering Wu Yueniang. A confrontation follows. Sister Ximen (西门大姐) defends Li Ping'er. A shipment of thirty thousand salt certificates forces Ximen to marshal five hundred taels and arrange escorts. Ying Bojie (应伯爵) asks to borrow money. Zhang Zhupo (张竹坡) criticizes Ximen's excesses. The monk's medicine prompts urgency and poor judgment. The episodes intertwine bribery, religious spectacle, sexual license and business schemes. They show how private vice, market ambition and official corruption reinforce one another. The household's celebrations, quarrels and errands reveal a wider social decay.
