This volume links household trifles with a violent crime and corrupt justice. Dai'an (玳安) and Qintong (琴童) fetch a fur coat for Pan Jinlian (潘金莲). Qintong struggles with wrong keys. Yu Xiao (玉箫) and Xiao Yu (小玉) eventually find the coat in the outer kitchen and deliver it to Wu Yue-niang (吴月娘). At Wu Yue-niang's house the women distribute garments. Pan Jinlian refuses the shabby fur at first. Meng Yulou (孟玉楼) and others persuade her to wear it for warmth. They go out in snow to enjoy lanterns. Wu Yin'er (吴银儿) parts at an alley and goes home. Later Ximen Qing (西门庆) hosts a feast. Guests stealthily pocket dishes and Ximen Qing grows drunk. He is led to Li Jiaor's (李娇儿) room. The servants are alarmed and reprimanded. The maids' behavior provokes anger from the mistresses. A fortune teller is summoned. The divination promises prosperity for Wu Yue-niang. It gives a favorable sign for Meng Yulou. For Li Ping'er (李瓶儿) the oracle shows three men and a red-haired ghost. The reading suggests a third man in her life and danger. Li Ping'er dreams of the ghost and wakes in fear. Pan Jinlian ridicules the divination. Meanwhile a Yangzhou merchant, Miao Tianxiu (苗天秀), sails with silk and gold. He buys a concubine but has no heir. A monk warns him of danger. Miao travels to the capital with his steward Miao Qing (苗青) and the stable boy An Tong (安童). At Shanwan the pirate duo Chen San (陈三) and Weng Ba (翁八) attack. The vessel is seized. Miao and An Tong are struck down or cast into the river. Miao Qing colludes with the robbers and conceals the loot at Qinghe Dock (清河码头). An Tong survives and is rescued by a fisherman. He reports the crime. Xia Tixing (夏提刑) takes the case, seizes the proceeds, and pursues the suspects. Chen San and Weng Ba are arrested and under interrogation name Miao Qing as the chief beneficiary. Miao Qing flees to Le San (乐三) in Qinghe County. Le San's wife (乐三嫂) and Wang Liu (王六) arrange bribes to save him. Wang Liu first gathers fifty taels and cloth. Later the sum is raised to one thousand taels. Miao Qing sells silks and exchanges gold to raise cash. He bribes the gate servants and Ping'an (平安) to gain access to Ximen Qing's household. Miao kneels in the rear garden and begs Ximen Qing for mercy. Ximen Qing accepts payment and orders him to leave Qinghe that night. Ximen Qing gives five hundred taels to his colleague Xia Longxi (夏龙溪). Xia Longxi accepts the money and shifts blame to Chen San and Weng Ba. They are sent to Dongchang Prefecture (东昌府) for Hu Shiwen (胡师文) to examine. Hu Shiwen is bribed and rules in favor of influence. An Tong vows to travel to the capital to appeal. The episode closes with domestic trifles, maritime betrayal, and official corruption tangled together. Private greed subverts justice and the innocent resolve to seek redress.
