Meng Yulou (孟玉楼) proposes a celebratory banquet. The women pool funds. Li Ping'er (李瓶儿) covers a deficit. Sun Xue'e (孙雪娥) is forced to pawn a silver hairpin. The feast features braised pig trotters and maid performances. A new bride, Song Huilian (宋惠莲), draws attention. She was taken in by Laiwang (来旺) after her first husband Jiang Cong (蒋聪) was killed. Poor and often in borrowed clothes, she pleases the household with her cooking. Ximen Qing (西门庆) is captivated and arranges private meetings. Yu Xiao (玉箫) secretly lends cloth and arranges a garden tryst. Pan Jinlian (潘金莲) grows suspicious. She follows them to a rock grotto at Cangchunwu (藏春坞) and pins the cave door with a hairpin. Song Huilian is trapped overnight and shamed the next morning. Ping'an (平安) and Yingchun (迎春) become involved and the hairpin is returned to Ximen Qing. Song Huilian pleads with Pan Jinlian. Pan mocks her and drives her from the inner circle. Elsewhere Li Ming (李铭) is accused of groping Chunmei (春梅) and is dismissed. Ying Bojue (应伯爵) and Xie Xida (谢希大) later mediate earlier quarrels. A flirtation between Song Huilian and the guest Chen Jingji (陈敬济) is interrupted by a child's cry. Ximen spends days away at the Lichun courtyard (立春院) as rumors spread. The narrative shows how banquets, songs and petty favors form an economy of influence. Small kindnesses expose the vulnerable to new dangers. Pan Jinlian consolidates power while Song Huilian oscillates between hope and fear. The household becomes a tense stage of appetites, alliances and quotidian cruelties.
