Wang Po (王婆) devises a careful scheme to help Ximen Qing (西门庆) seduce Pan Jinlian (潘金莲). She first frames five shorthand conditions by invoking Pan An (潘安) for beauty and Deng Tong (邓通) for wealth. She explains that the suitor must flatter, have leisure, and be vigorous. Wang Po then recounts Pan Jinlian's background. Pan learned needlework with Wang Zhaoxuan (王昭宣) and was later sold into the household of a wealthy patron Zhang the wealthy patron (张大户). She was once discovered in an affair by the mistress Yu Shi (余氏) and eventually forced to marry Wu Dalang (武大郎). Wang Po judges that Pan is clever with her hands but vulnerable to flattery. The plot calls for Ximen Qing to buy blue and white silks and white gauze and pretend they are for a shroud. Pan is invited to check the almanac and sew. She visits Wang Po's teahouse for several days. Wang Po praises her skill and presses food and wine on her. On the appointed day Ximen Qing appears. He flatters her needlework and her looks. Wang Po orchestrates seating and drink so that the two are left alone. After repeated toasts and compliments the liaison occurs. Wang Po surprises them and then blackmails Pan into continuing the clandestine meetings. A young pear seller named Xiao Yunge (小郓哥) notices gossip and confronts Wang Po. He tells Wu Dalang and they plan a sting. They arrange a morning confrontation at the teahouse. During the encounter Ximen Qing rushes out and savagely beats Wu Dalang, who is left unconscious and bleeding. To silence the scandal Wang Po proposes poisoning. Ximen Qing obtains heart medicine and arsenic. Wang Po parcels the poison and instructs Pan Jinlian to administer it at midnight. Pan hides arsenic in the kitchen and places the heart medicine by her husband's pillow, prepares white broth and cloths, and waits in terror. The plan to kill and then conceal the body is set. The household teeters on the brink as plots about to be carried out threaten a tragic outcome. Wu Song (武松) has not yet returned, and the conspirators hope to erase evidence before he arrives.
