Wu Song (武松) wins fame by killing the tiger on Jingyang Ridge (景阳冈). He is escorted to the Qinghe County yamen (清河县衙). Magistrate Li Datian (李达天) admires him. The magistrate offers reward, official clothes and lodging. Villagers bring wine and gifts. Wu Song refuses private gain at first. He meets his short and humble brother Wu Dalang (武大郎). The brothers embrace. At home they meet Pan Jinlian (潘金莲). She greets Wu Song with special attentions. Pan is struck by his looks. She pours wine and lingers near him. Wu Song keeps distance out of duty and decorum. He politely declines her advances. Pan grows bolder. She provokes and tempts him in private. Wu Song rebukes her sharply and preserves propriety. Humiliated, Pan cries and then falsely accuses him of impropriety. Ashamed and constrained, Wu Song quietly packs and takes lodging elsewhere. Later the magistrate asks him to carry gifts to the capital Dongjing (东京). These gifts include bribes for an official named Zhu Mian (朱勔). Wu Song accepts the task and prepares to leave. On visits home the household tensions rise. Wu Dalang is meek and withdraws from the market. His submissive behavior angers Pan further. At a heated meal Wu Song's restrained praise for Pan's housekeeping is misread. She storms off in rage. A separate incident brings Pan into contact with Ximen Qing (西门庆). A falling curtain rod nearly hits a passerby. They meet and feel mutual attraction. The narrative thus moves from a heroic public triumph to intimate domestic friction. Honor, desire and rumor collide. The threads of seduction, accusation and outside temptation tighten. What begins as a celebrated victory becomes the seedbed of personal betrayal and mounting danger.
