Tang Sanzang (唐三藏) and his companions return to the treasure pavilion where the Buddha (如来佛祖) selects genuine written sutras. The disciples inspect the scrolls and finally assemble a full canon of five thousand and forty-eight volumes. To complete the number Tang Sanzang gives the purple-gold alms bowl (紫金钵盂) that the Tang court had bestowed. Avalokitesvara Guanyin (观世音菩萨) audits the monk's trials and finds eighty calamities recorded but one short of the required count. She orders the Golden-Headed Jiedi (金头揭谛) to overtake the Eight Vajra Guardians (八大金刚) and instruct them to enact the missing trial. Jiedi briefly plans to split the work. Guanyin refuses any shortcut. In his haste Jiedi disturbs the guardians. The guardians cease their support and vanish. The pilgrims fall from the sky and land on the east bank of the Tongtian River (通天河). There the Old White Turtle (老白鼋) reproaches Tang Sanzang for failing to request liberation from his shell. In anger the turtle flips and throws the monk and his disciples back into the river. Sun Wukong (孙悟空), Zhu Bajie (猪八戒), Sha Wujing (沙和尚) and the White Dragon Horse (白龙马) each exercise their skills. They recover the sutra rolls from the water and spread them on sun-warmed stones to dry. Many pages are wet, adherent or torn. The pilgrims lament the damage. Villagers at the Chen Family Village (陈家庄) arrive and offer shelter. They help sort and thoroughly dry the scrolls and honor the travelers with food and rest. Before long the Eight Vajra Guardians lift the party again and bear them toward Chang'an. Emperor Taizong (唐太宗李世民) greets Tang Sanzang in the capital. He orders copies to be transcribed and sets the Yanta Temple (雁塔寺) as a center for teaching the sutras. At the final assembly the summons comes to return to Leiyin Temple (雷音寺) and then present the books at Ling Mountain (灵山). Before the Buddha the pilgrims receive praise. Their merits are rewarded and titles conferred. The long pilgrimage reaches its ordained completion.
