In Diling County (地灵县) a lavish send-off delays Tang Sanzang (唐三藏) and his companions. A sudden storm forces them to shelter in a ruined temple called Huaguang Temple (华光庙). That night a gang of robbers breaks into the household of Kou Hong (寇洪) and plunders its valuables. Kou Hong is killed while resisting. His family, grieving, blames the visiting monks and files a complaint with the local authorities. The prefect orders Yu Dutou (于督头) to pursue the thieves at once. The robbers divide the loot in a nearby wood and soon encounter the traveling monks. Sun Wukong (孙悟空) confronts them. He uses magic to subdue and bind the thieves. The disciples follow the robbers' directions and recover two carriages of chests and treasure. Out of gratitude for Kou Hong's earlier kindness, Tang Sanzang insists the goods be returned. The party moves to escort the carriages back toward the county. On the road they meet officials and are mistaken for the bandits. Yu Dutou's men arrest Tang Sanzang and his three disciples and carry them to the yamen of Tongtai Prefecture (铜台府). Magistrate Jiang (姜坤三) presides and orders harsh interrogation. Tang Sanzang, to protect his companions, confesses falsely and endures the head-crank and other torments. In the jail the monk laments the perverse result of good deeds. Sun Wukong explains the dharma to calm him. Jailers later try to seize the embroidered kasaya. When they discover the official travel pass they change their posture and offer respectful treatment. Sun Wukong slips out at night by making a decoy from a hair and transforms into a tiny form to investigate. He overhears Kou's household, witnesses a strange voice from the coffin that compels the family to retract their accusation, and then visits the magistrate's study to frighten him through a painted portrait. These bold interventions set the scene for a reversal. The episode closes with truth emerging and a hope that Tang Sanzang's innocence will be restored.
