Tang Sanzang (唐三藏) and his four disciples arrive at the Zhuzi Kingdom (朱紫国) and lodge in a modest side room at the Huitong Hall (会同馆). They must cook for themselves. Provisions include vegetables, tofu, bamboo shoots, a bowl of rice and a bowl of noodles. There are no seasonings. Sha Wujing (沙悟净) finds the kitchen empty of oil and salt. Sun Wukong (孙悟空) and Pigsy (猪八戒) go into the market to buy supplies and sample snacks. On the street they encounter a crowd gathered around an imperial notice that calls for a healer. Sun Wukong, amused, blows the proclamation into the air. The paper lands tucked into Pigsy s clothing. Guards see the notice missing and seize Pigsy as the presumed revealer. Tang Sanzang takes his travel permit to the palace. At the Golden Throne Hall (金銮殿) he meets a court that is anxious. The king has lain ill for three years. When Tang Sanzang recounts the dynastic history and the reasons for his westward mission, the sovereign brightens. The ruler invites him to a modest vegetarian meal in the Pixiang Hall (披香殿). Word of the revealed proclamation reaches the palace. Eunuchs and officers hurry to find the supposed healer. At the Huitong Hall the captains escort Pigsy before the household superiors. Sun Wukong plays with the situation and mocks officials. He then adopts the persona of a chief physician and dons fine robes. The court is at once incredulous and alarmed. Some ministers call for punishment. Others argue that a strange appearance might conceal a strange skill. They consent to a diagnosis without face to face contact. Sun Wukong says he knows the suspended silk pulse technique. He plucks three fine hairs, breathes on them and transforms them into long golden threads. He announces he will hang the threads outside the palace and take the king s pulse from a distance. Tang Sanzang watches in dread. He fears both for the ruler and for the trouble his disciples may bring. The lodge and the court are unsettled. The episode leaves the situation poised on the edge of further chaos.
