Tang Seng (唐僧) and his companions arrive at Tuoluo Village (驼罗庄) at dusk. An elder named Li Laohan (李老汉) answers and tells them that for three years a malign presence has devoured livestock and sometimes people. The nearby Seven Jue Ridge (七绝岭) is carpeted with persimmon trees. Fallen fruit rots and piles into foul heaps that choke the passes. Villagers cannot clear the stench or the blockage. Tang Seng explains his pilgrimage and begs lodging. Sun Wukong (孙悟空) volunteers to hunt the demon. Zhu Bajie (猪八戒) is fearful and Tang Seng urges caution and patience. The villagers recount how they once hired a famed master from Daye Bodhi Temple (大叶菩提庙) and later an elder from Dangmo Temple (荡魔观). Both exorcists fought but were later found dead in gruesome ways. Their disciples then extorted the villagers and the community sank into poverty. The villagers promise only food and shelter and pledge fields and a temple as reward. They draw up a written indemnity declaring that life and death lie with the master. The creature arrives in a choking mist. Two golden eyes and flexible spears with soft handles appear. Sun Wukong, Zhu Bajie and the sand monk fight the spear-shadows in the courtyard but will not charge into the stench and fog. At cockcrow the thing retreats into the mountain. Wukong and Bajie pursue to the base of the Seven Jue Ridge. The slope is littered with rotten persimmons and a nauseating smell. They encounter a giant python that spits mist and uses spear-like tongues. In the struggle Bajie is dragged into a hole and Wukong is swallowed whole. Inside the serpent Wukong feigns calm. He uses his staff to manipulate the creature from within. He props and stretches the body until its skin bursts and the wounded serpent dies. The two haul the corpse back to the village. The people rejoice and host the pilgrims. Because the old route is clogged, Wukong orders Bajie to assume his true pig form and root out the massed rot. Reluctant but fed and aided by villagers, Bajie clears more than a hundred li in days. The pilgrims depart amid thanks. Soon after they enter the capital of the Zhuzi Kingdom (朱紫国). At the Huitong Inn (会同馆) local etiquette places them in a side chamber and provides ingredients rather than full service. Sun Wukong resists hiding his face and proclaims himself the Handsome Monkey King. Tang Seng restrains him with gentle rebuke. The group receives honor and slight at once and presses onward on their western journey.
