"Portrait of a Lady" is an early novel by author Henry James. Hailed as a masterpiece when it was first serialized and then released as a book in 1881, it tells the story of a young heiress trying to navigate her way through European society and her various romantic entanglements.
The plot follows Isabel Archer, an American socialite who travels to Europe after the death of her father. After a second inheritance makes her very wealthy, Isabel finds herself the target of fortune-hunters and, rushing into marriage, Isabel finds herself shackled to a selfish and manipulative husband. The novel is a fascinating and unique take on marriage, faithfulness, honor and betrayal. It helped to solidify Henry James as a major force in late 19th-century literature.
"Portrait of a Lady" is often listed among the finest novels ever written and it is presented here in its original and unabridged format.
