IS IT A coup to dethrone me?
Crown Prince Andreas Drakos of Drakon joked as he entered his office and found his family looking at him with all sorts of expressions: concern in his sister Eleni's eyes, unyielding determination in Mia's, something he couldn't quite define in his brother Nikandros's, and icy coldness in Gabriel's.
"None of us wants your job, your popularity, or your life," replied Nikandros, the financial genius who had put Drakon on the road to recovery after the mess his father had created over the past decade.
Nik was right. His life would have given him hives at any other time; he had the Crown Council pressing him to announce the choice of Drakon's next queen, and the press was increasingly questioning his mental health, his frequent disappearances from Drakon over the past year, and even his sexuality...
However, he didn't have the mental strength left for anything other than what he had been searching for for two years, and he knew he was getting closer.
He sat down next to Mia and found the scent of talcum powder strangely reassuring.
–How are you, Mia?
She took his hands, and he tried not to flinch. Physical contact made him nervous, and Mia already knew it, but he and her sister-in-law had grown very close over the past few months.
"You haven't been to see the twins, Andreas. After all the trouble you've created with the heirs for Drakon, I feel neglected."
"I just got back to Drakon," he replied with a smile.
–And I guess that's why we're all here. What's up, Andreas?
"You're letting me leave Tia and Alexio to ask myself that question?" Andreas turned to Nik, who glared at him. "You look awful," he added, turning to Mia, who had dark circles under her eyes.
–Leave it, Nik. You know he's trying to make you jump –she smiled and her eyes widened.
shone with the same joy she'd seen in Nik's lately. "I have two good reasons for looking so haggard, Your Highness," Mia continued, looking at him closely. "You, on the other hand, don't, and you do look dreadful. Besides, although Nik and Gabriel wouldn't put it quite like that, we're all... very worried about you."
He frowned, and with a knot in his gut, he realized it was true.
–No need.
"Some say the Crown Council is asking you to resign, and your popularity is at an all-time low," Nik chimed in, his tone deceptively calm. "Some political analysts have even said our father's mental illness is beginning to manifest itself in you. You're leaving Drakon for days at a time, your aides don't know what you're going to do, you refuse to see even Ellie and me..."
"Is that why you're so worried?" Andreas asked, laughing. "Do you think Theos has passed on his madness to me along with everything else?"
"Of course not," Eleni replied, "but we do believe you've been behaving very strangely. Andreas, the House of Tharius is waiting for you to say something to break the news of your engagement. The coronation is in two months, and you..."
Her phone rang, and every nerve went on alert. She knew the news even before she turned on the screen. She swiped at it with trembling fingers.
Target found. Sending location details.
His breath caught in his chest and he had to force it out. His blood boiled with an uncontrollable satisfaction.
–Tell the House of Tharius that nothing at all.
The astonishment was palpable in the vast room, and Nik and Eleni looked at him with such concern that, for the first time in months, Andreas felt remorse.
–I'm sorry for leaving you all behind these past few months. I needed...
"Andreas!" Nik burst out. "We don't care that you took a few months off for the...
