Raised in a strong Amish family, Leah makes the biggest mistake of her life when she accepts Josiah Miller's proposal. The two are quickly caught up in the moment and end up making baby Eli, but when Josiah announces immediately afterward that their marriage plans must wait for his mother's approval, Leah storms off. In the months that follow, she bears Josiah's son without telling him, ending up distraught and depressed. Thinking all will be better without her, she runs away from the Amish world, leaving her Uncle Gideon to care for the child.
When she returns not long after to raise Eli, she finds that Gideon has, without knowing the truth, taken on prosperous farmer Josiah as a blacksmith apprentice, agreeing to teach him the skill. Leah must now deal with seeing Josiah on a regular basis. He says he still loves her, insisting they marry when he learns of their child.
