In 1890, left pregnant after an assault, Isabella signs up to be a mail-order bride to a rich older man in San Francisco, hoping he will believe the child is his. However, when she arrives by train, the man has died. Handsome, rakish Shane Parker, on a ranch a few hours south in Monterey, has requested a mail-order bride and is willing to marry Isabella.
Knowing Shane needs to believe the child is his, Isabella forces herself to share his bed but completely panics when Shane touches her, leaving him shocked and confused. When Shane realizes that Isabella is with child, he furiously plans to get an annulment, but Isabella has no money and nowhere to go.
Shane reluctantly relents but finds Isabella knows nothing about cooking, cleaning, or ranching. As Shane teaches Isabella how to cook and comforts her when she awakens with nightmares, his patience and kindness allow Isabella to begin to trust, and both experience emotions they hadn't expected. Can they build a life and family together?
