Just because dreams happen in your sleep doesn't mean they stay there...

At the ripe old age of eleven, Daphne Mulligan ends up in Bluebell House, a last-resort foster home in Bristol for children that nobody wants. The problem is, every time she falls asleep, she wakes up somewhere else with a complete lack of inhibition and powers bubbling beneath her fingertips. Is it any wonder that so many foster families haven't been able to cope? The older she gets, the more vivid the dreams become.

With no memory of her parents, Daphne knows very little about her past, her grandmother having died when she was an infant. The only clue to their past is the severe burns that mar her sister Clarissa's skin.

After rescuing some backpackers in the Sonoran desert, eating an ice cream shop dry and stealing a police car in her sleep, Daphne and her best friend Jacob Ortega confirm that her dreams are the real deal. Daphne's dramatic nighttime escapades don't translate to the day, where Daphne is persecuted by a particularly wicked teacher, dodges the school bullies and falls out with Clarissa over her 'made up dreams'.

Meanwhile, Daphne visits a woman, shaven and sickly, plugged into a symphony of beeping medical machines in what is clearly not a hospital. The dreams are fleeting, and she forgets about them. It appears that Daphne's dreams are trying to show her something, when, with a deep sense of familiarity, she discovers a burnt out chalet in the Swiss Alps. Daphne begins to unravel the truth as she learns that this was once the home of a family of scientists. Shocking similarities begin to emerge between their family and the little she knows of her own family. As she digs deeper, through dream trips to the Alps and covert investigations (which involve unwrapping all of the Christmas presents in her sleep) she begins to learn that the family who lived there were hiding some big secrets...
