The late afternoon sun streamed through the floor-to-ceiling windows of Café Luna, casting golden rectangles across the polished hardwood floors. Emma Richardson sat at table seven, nervously adjusting the collar of her navy blazer for the third time in as many minutes. She glanced at her watch—3:47 PM. Her blind date was supposed to arrive at 3:30, and punctuality had always been one of her non-negotiables when it came to first impressions.
She pulled out her phone and reread the text from her best friend Sarah: "His name is David. Tall, dark hair, wearing a blue button-down. He'll be carrying a copy of 'The Great Gatsby' so you can recognize each other. Trust me, Em, this one's different."
Emma had reluctantly agreed to the setup after months of Sarah's persistent matchmaking attempts. As the head librarian at the downtown branch, Emma spent most of her days surrounded by books and the occasional patron seeking directions to the restroom. Her social circle had gradually shrunk to a comfortable but perhaps too predictable group of fellow book lovers and her rescue cat, Pemberton.
The café door chimed, and Emma's head snapped up. A tall man with dark hair entered, scanning the room with the telltale expression of someone looking for a stranger. He wore a blue shirt and carried a book tucked under his arm. Emma's stomach fluttered as she raised her hand in a small wave.
"Emma?" he asked, approaching her table with a warm smile that crinkled the corners of his brown eyes.
"That's me," she replied, standing to shake his hand. "You must be David."
"Actually," he said, his smile faltering slightly, "I'm Marcus. Marcus Chen. I think there might be some confusion."
