The brass key felt unnaturally cold in Elena Whitmore's palm as she stood before the wrought iron gates of Ravencroft Manor. October mist clung to the Yorkshire moors like spectral fingers, and the Gothic spires of her great-aunt's estate pierced the gray sky with an almost defiant elegance. She had never met Cordelia Ravencroft, yet here she stood, the sole inheritor of a fortune and a mystery that would change her life forever.

The taxi had long since disappeared down the winding lane, leaving Elena alone with her single suitcase and a growing sense of unease. The manor's windows stared down at her like hollow eyes, their dark panes reflecting nothing but the sullen afternoon sky. Ivy crept across the stone facade in twisted patterns, as if the very walls were alive and breathing.

Elena pushed open the heavy front door, its hinges protesting with a groan that seemed to echo through centuries. The entrance hall stretched before her, vast and shadowed, with a grand staircase that curved upward into darkness. Dust motes danced in the weak light filtering through stained glass windows, and the air carried the scent of old leather, aged wood, and something else—something that made her skin prickle with inexplicable dread.

"Miss Whitmore, I presume?" The voice startled her, and she spun around to see a tall, gaunt man emerging from the shadows. His dark suit was impeccably pressed, but his face bore the pallor of someone who rarely saw sunlight. "I am Aldrich Pemberton, your great-aunt's solicitor. I've been expecting you."

Elena's heart gradually slowed to its normal rhythm. "Mr. Pemberton, yes. I received your letter about the inheritance. I must admit, this is all rather overwhelming."
