Mental health encompasses our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act as we navigate through life. Just as we care for our physical health through exercise, proper nutrition, and medical checkups, our mental health requires attention, understanding, and maintenance. Mental health is not simply the absence of mental illness, but rather a state of well-being where individuals can cope with normal stresses, work productively, and contribute to their communities.

The World Health Organization defines mental health as a state of well-being in which every individual realizes their potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to their community. This definition emphasizes that mental health is about thriving, not just surviving. It's about feeling good about yourself, maintaining healthy relationships, and having the resilience to bounce back from life's inevitable challenges.

Mental health exists on a spectrum. We all have mental health, just as we all have physical health. Sometimes we feel mentally strong and resilient, other times we may struggle with stress, anxiety, or sadness. These fluctuations are normal parts of the human experience. However, when these struggles persist and significantly interfere with our daily functioning, relationships, or quality of life, it may indicate a mental health condition that could benefit from professional support.
