The ancient towers of Valdris Castle pierced the morning mist like silver needles threading through silk. Princess Lyralei stood at her chamber window, watching the sun paint the kingdom in shades of gold and amber. Today marked her twentieth birthday, and with it came the weight of a prophecy that had haunted her family for generations.

"Your Highness," came a gentle voice from behind her. Lyralei turned to see her lady-in-waiting, Mira, carrying a silver tray laden with breakfast. "Your father requests your presence in the throne room immediately after you break your fast."

Lyralei's stomach tightened. She had been dreading this moment since she was old enough to understand the ancient words carved into the stone beneath the royal throne: When the heir reaches the age of decision, the realm's fate shall be sealed by union blessed or cursed.

"Thank you, Mira," Lyralei said, accepting a cup of honeyed tea. "Has there been any word from the neighboring kingdoms?"

Mira's expression grew troubled. "Three princes arrived during the night, Your Highness. Prince Aldric of Thornwick, Prince Castor of the Iron Mountains, and..." she hesitated, "Prince Kael of the Shadow Realm."

At the mention of the last name, Lyralei nearly dropped her cup. The Shadow Realm had been their enemy for centuries, its dark magic a constant threat to the peaceful lands of Valdris. Why would King Roderick even consider entertaining a prince from such a place?

"Did my father say why he would allow Prince Kael entrance to our lands?"

"The prophecy, Your Highness. It speaks of four kingdoms, four paths, and a choice that will either unite the realms in peace or plunge them into eternal darkness."
