The victim is unrecognisable, pulverised so badly that even magic cannot tell me who they were. As Chester's only magical Detective Inspector, I handle the cases the Common police cannot touch. This one screams Other Realm from the moment I find a caged bird at the scene, a bird that talks.

My feathered "witness" is foul-mouthed, fond of creative insults, and claims to know exactly who killed our victim. Whether he is telling the truth or just trying to get under my skin, I can't afford to ignore him.

Then Krieg, the King of Ogres, muscles into the investigation. He is powerful, political, and far too distracting for my liking. With magical factions bristling, a killer still at large, and a witness who never shuts up, I will need to draw on all my training and my rare magical abilities to close this case.
