The eighteenth year. The phrase itself felt like a prophecy, heavy with the unspoken expectation of change. For most of my friends, it meant freedom - driving tests, college applications, the heady promise of late-night parties and the intoxicating scent of newfound independence. For me, it meant a looming deadline. A deadline for answers. The air in our house, usually filled with the quiet hum of my father's perpetual stillness, was thick with an almost tangible anticipation. It wasn't the excited thrum of a birthday, but something colder, deeper, like the unsettling quiet before a storm. Outside, the late autumn wind gnawed at the edges of the world, whipping the skeletal branches of the ancient oaks that guarded our property. But the chill that truly clung to me wasn't from the biting air; it seeped from the very walls of this secluded sanctuary, a cold that mirrored the vast, echoing void in my family history.
