The good news is that you don't need to have read Relentless Misery to love this. Nor do you need to be from the North East of England like the author or to understand regional dialects, to share the common strands of hope, dreams and relentless misery that are the inevitable fate of almost all football fans. What Davey J Ashfield does - in the great British tradition of the grumbling old git - is to create the ideal opportunities for us football supporters to laugh at our stupid antagonisms, and our insane rivalries while finding common ground in that in the long run most of our clubs lose more key fixtures, trophy and promotion opportunities and local derbys than we win. Or perhaps it's that they lodge deeper in our minds than the fleeting successes. 'Extra Time Edition' is a comic tour-de-force and if you can't laugh at these tales and thoughts then there's no hope for you.
