后秦是淝水之战后羌人姚苌以关中地区为中心建立的割据政权。自公元384年四月姚苌在渭北马牧起兵，至417年八月东晋军队攻占长安、姚泓出降，后秦共历三主，存续34年。在极盛时期，后秦与北魏、东晋呈鼎足而立之势，在十六国后期具有重要地位。本书全面叙述后秦政权的历史，包括"建国前史""建立与兴盛""衰落与灭亡"及"政权结构"四个部分。
