The Last Lap Retirement Village for Racing Whippets & "Trubulsom Porquapines" nestles in the village of Winklebutty, famed for its black truffles and stanky toe fungus outbreaks.
When the Last National Winklebutty Bank threatens to foreclose on the property and send its canine residents to their doom in the factory owned by the evil Sausage Baron of Lumpy Bottom, Rocco Parmigiana, retired racing royalty Angeli Cup and her steed Destiny's Poo have only one option: limp right out of retirement. Can this unlikely duo race once more to win the most prestigious gong of them all-the Winklebutty Cup, complete with its victory stinky cheese?
Standing in their way are age, incompetence, insolence, malfeasance, flatulence - and Rocco's nephew, Chad Cheerio, with his cheating cheetah Fate's Fur Art. It's the race that significantly slows a nation, and while 'there can be only one' winner, there can be as many losers as needed to fill the plot holes.
Join the eccentric residents of The Last Lap as they attempt to rewrite the Winklebutty Bigbooty Museum and Burlesque Cabaret Restaurant's Big Book of Racing Records and smash through the fifth wall to face off with henchmen, henchwomen, henchshadows, and possibly even ... henchporcupines!

What I loved most about The Last Lap by AK McBalls was the way laughter and tension flowed together. Some scenes had me laughing, while others tightened with suspense, making me eager to see what might happen next. ... Angeli was the heart of the story for me. Her determination to hold on to the refuge pushed everything forward, and I liked how her strength sometimes slipped to reveal her fear. I cared about their struggles and wanted to stay with them until the end. The humor and chaos had me laughing, but the book also explores themes of betrayal, greed, loyalty, and the hope that pushes people on, even when the odds seem impossible. This gave the novel meaning without taking away its humor. I gladly recommend this book to readers who love a good laugh. - Georgia, Reader's Favorite

The Last Lap is more than just a comedic story about a race to save a retirement home in a whimsical town; it offers a satirical take on a variety of social issues, conspiracy theories, and political commentary. The narrative dives into topics like corruption, police bias, alien abductions, and sports doping, among others. AK McBalls uses wordplay and frequently breaks the fourth wall, directly engaging with readers about Italian whippets and Winklebutty's history. ... The ending is particularly shocking, as it shifts from a plot focused on a wild race to a whodunit, making it highly engaging and suspenseful. Overall, this is an entertaining story and a must-read for anyone interested in unique tales that blend humor with social critique. Luwi Nyakansaila
