Anton Chekhov was Russia's premiere dramatist and his plays are among the most popular and performed theatrical works in history. Collected here are four of his finest plays: "The Seagull," "Uncle Vanya," "The Three Sisters" and "The Cherry Orchard," each of which enjoyed successful initial runs at the Moscow Arts Theatre under the direction of legendary director Konstantin Stanislavsky.
Chekhov's plays were among the first dramatic works to feature "realism," wherein the characters spoke in everyday language and dealt with real-world issues. This naturalistic approach to theatre was (and is to this day) extremely popular with audiences and these four plays have enjoyed worldwide acclaim, having been translated into dozens of languages.
Exploring themes of family strife, class conflict, the fall of the aristocracy and the rise of the new Russian middle class, Chekhov's timeless subject matter - as well as his incisive and subtle sense of humor - have thrilled and moved audiences for over a century.
