The letter arrived on a Tuesday morning, its cream-colored envelope bearing the elegant script of a law firm Eleanor had never heard of. She nearly discarded it with the rest of the mail, assuming it was another solicitation, but something about the weight of the paper made her pause. The return address read "Whitmore & Associates, Attorneys at Law, Salem, Massachusetts."

Eleanor Hartwell set down her morning tea and carefully opened the envelope. The contents made her heart skip a beat. According to the letter, she had inherited a property from a great-aunt she'd never known existed—one Millicent Ravenwood. The house, called Ravenwood Manor, sat on fifty acres of woodland in the hills outside Salem, and it was now entirely hers.

At twenty-eight, Eleanor had grown accustomed to disappointment. Her job at the Boston Public Library paid enough to cover her modest apartment and simple pleasures, but dreams of travel or homeownership had long since faded into resignation. This inheritance felt like a miracle, albeit a puzzling one.

The next morning found her sitting across from Mr. Whitmore himself, a thin man with wire-rimmed spectacles who seemed older than the antique desk he sat behind. His office smelled of leather and dust, and Eleanor noticed that he avoided meeting her eyes directly when he spoke.

"Miss Hartwell," he began, shuffling through a stack of papers, "I must tell you that your great-aunt was quite... particular about this inheritance. She left very specific instructions."
