John James Audubon and Lucy Bakewell begin 1803 an ocean apart and in two different worlds. He is fleeing conscription into Napoleon's army, while she is struggling to raise her siblings in rural Pennsylvania. But by the end of the year, they meet and begin a story like no other in early America.

John is brilliant, brave, and probably too handsome for his own good. Lucy is likely even more brilliant and is happy to find someone who can keep up. Despite their instant connection, their courtship is tested by family opposition, global politics, and pirates. Actual pirates.

Little do they know, however, that these challenges would pale in comparison to what faces them on the other side of the Appalachian Mountains. As they travel into the heart of America, the young nation proves to be a place of danger and death. But also promise.

The young couple aren't seeking land or riches but discovery. They are on a high-stakes mission that will secure their future and a place in history books. Decades later, John James Audubon would be the world's most famous ornithologist and wildlife painter, but not before he and Lucy almost lost it all, including their lives.

THE AUDUBONS follows John and Lucy through years of adventure and romance. The almost entirely true story is an epic American saga woven with nature, drama, struggle, and beauty. Through it all, their romance burns brightly with joy and wit and love.
