Life as a wielder of magic isn't always easy when you're extremely powerful, untrained and still a teenager. Add to it the pressure of learning you have other extraordinary abilities that no other magic wielder possesses – so no one knows how to begin your training – and your only guide is the essence of a capricious dragon within your mind.

Wryn endeavors to settle into a more domestic life with her beloved Elias and their new son, Arn, who is already beginning to show signs of his own natural abilities. But after more than one frightening encounter with the new and powerful abilities she's wielding, Elias, Daegar and Jack begin to realize it will take far more than the powerful mix of knowledge, instincts, and reflexes when it comes to Wryn's magical education. Add in empathy and sympathetic patience then throw in more than a little bit of mischief with young apprentice Stilgrin and Wryn slowly begins to form more comprehension of the power and true dangers of her own capabilities.

As if not faced with enough challenges, as she continues to struggle through her journey to learn more about "normal" magic as well as her Ambriast gifts, Wryn is thrown another learning curve. Forced to deal with yet another venerable force, along with the impending nuptials of Prince Edrik to Lady Nidaia, Wryn's anxiety level begins to build. The hope of respite comes in the form of Daegar's invitation for Wryn and Jack to travel with him to visit the apprentice of a deceased colleague. The trip turns into far more than what Wryn and Jack anticipated and the introduction to the apprentice is just the beginning.
