Emily's Shadow is a trilogy of fantasy/historical novels set in the 1940s that strongly depict the life and culture of England.
Emily, after World War Two ended, is not about to settle down to domestic bliss. She wants an education. She doubts marriage will ever be for her. Yet, she yearns for a family where everyone is together in the way things were when her mother was alive before the war.
After the war was over, people expected an instantaneous return to a happy life of freedom, but their suffering did not end with the ceasefire. Many cities were in ruins. Food shortages and food rationing continued. Women were expected to leave their war-time jobs and return to the kitchen.
Emily did not want to be limited to a domestic life. In fact, she'd had enough of taking care of her younger brothers. When her father brought home a bride and insisted that they go on a happy family holiday, Emily was angry and confused. Her strong desire for family was crushed not only by the squabbles within the family, but also by an attack from an evil sorceress, who had been trapped for centuries by Merlin, but had now found the means of escape.
This evil sorceress, Vivienne, is in some ways Emily's shadow, representing deep interior fear and anger that resulted from the evil of war. Emily is thrust into an epic journey where she must battle the sorceress and claim her psychic gifts to help others.
