In a mythic age, 'Kaun, second daughter of Night and Darkness, wears a magical calabash necklace that makes plants grow—but causes her to reject meat and grow idle. When the tree people of the old time, demand the necklace's return, her family is transformed to protect it. 'Kaun falls into a deep sleep, becoming the plains, as trees grow upon her, trying—and failing—to kill her. The story of Plains tells how 'Kaun, daughter of Night and Darkness, became the sleeping earth we now call the plains — her body still nurturing plants while roots invade her in deathless sleep. Dancer the Fireman, her husband and the spirit of fire, taught the Bushmen to make fire and cook meat, marking the first Nu-festival. Their daughter Mirage, or Antjie of the Plains, uses illusion and dreams to protect her people from invaders, luring them into ghostly mirages until they flee in shame. Together, they embody the spirits of land, flame, and illusion — timeless guardians of Bushman memory.
