1931, Mississippi..

Young upstart blues musician Robert Johnson is bullied by his elders, Charley Patton and Son House. He leaves to get his act together. Hit the road, shake some dust.

By way of New York, he travels to Europe. On his way, he meets a slew of remarkable people — Blind Blake, Nicola Tesla, Louise Brooks, Frida Kahlo, James Ensor, and many others. He learns and steals from all. In Antwerp, something happens.

Back in the USA, Johnson stuns everyone with his newfound skills. He records twenty-nine iconic tracks that inspire many, and then dies in mysterious circumstances. He's twenty-seven.

In the sixties, he becomes an enduring blues legend, with his own mythology, inspiring both rock musicians, from Bob Dylan (making a guest appearance) to Eric Clapton, and blues amateurs alike.

This lost coming-of-age story reveals what never happened
