Huscarl is an old Norse word meaning a royal bodyguard. The saga follows the precarious life of Olaf Slagbjørn, recruited as a gifted archer at the age of eighteen in 11th century Norway. His ability to attract ladies from all classes lands him in trouble when he is seduced by Queen Tora, wife of the terrifying King of Norway, Harald Hardråda. Fleeing to England, Olaf gets involved with the Godwin family, Harold and Tostig. Olaf saves Harold's life in a shipwreck and the two are captured by William, Duke of Normandy and a claimant to the English throne. Returning to England, Harold declares himself king. Book one concludes with two tumultuous battles in 1066 at Stamford Bridge and Hastings against the armies of Harald Hardråda and William of Normandy.
