Many works have set forth various explanations for the outbreak of World War I. Yet comparatively few have focused on the interdependent relationship between Germany and Austria-Hungary and, in particular, Germany's determination to sustain her fragile Austrian ally—and their alliance—no matter the cost. This book seeks to address this important and sometimes overlooked aspect of the crisis of July 1914.
