Jack Mitchel retired from the sheriff's department a year ago, turning the SAR team over to his eldest son, Jason, so he could recover from a serious injury and spend time with his youngest son, Joey. After an earthquake brings down a slope on top of an estranged friend whom Jack digs out, he finds himself facing his past. Al Donner's daughter is returning to South Lake Tahoe. And Jack has been asked to deliver a message.
Meg Donner doesn't really want to go back to her home town but when the sheriff calls to tell her that her father is in critical condition in the hospital, she's forced to return and face her past. Along with her daughter, Jenny, her SAR dog, and their horses, Meg drives back to South Lake Tahoe.
Jack is caught between his promise to Al, Meg's fearful avoidance, and his own guilt. Can the injuries of the past heal? It seems disaster is the only way to reunite two wounded hearts.
