On the cusp of winter, Detective Fox is called to Trinity Cathedral when three carefully staged bodies are found, each with their throat slit. The crime scene offers little evidence. Despite their tragic history, Rebecca joins Fox in pursuit of the killer. As more bodies continue to appear, Rebecca's skill with the cards offers insights to the killer's deadly design. It soon becomes obvious that the victims are not random. As Fox and Rebecca pursue the killer, from wealthy mansions to asylums, they begin to unravel another series of crimes buried under the city's web of privilege and power. Crimes that began with Fox's birth, connecting him to the killer, and putting everyone he loves in danger.
