In this story, Theo and Marian live in an isolated government outpost, where their job is to monitor environmental data. One day, an inspector arrives with unsettling news: Theo has been selected to be temporarily relocated off-planet—but a memory-cloned "stand-in" will remain with Marian in his place.

Theo tries to resist, but the more he fights, the more blurred the lines become between who he was, who he is, and who he might already be.
