In the first half of the 20th century the polio virus claimed the lives of thousands of American children. Thanks to the research of microbiologist Jonas Salk, the year 1955 witnessed the development of a vaccine. Fifty years later, Salk is still celebrated as the man who helped the global community overcome one of the worst health epidemics in history.
