This volume includes 33 essays on a vast array of historical topics. Many of the issues are controversial and are rarely covered in mainstream discourse. In one set of essays, the historical truth about Lee Harvey Oswald, the alleged assassin of President Kennedy, will be disclosed after sixty years of silence on the part of the historians. In another essay, the facts about JFK's Vietnam policy will be assessed in his own words, demonstrating that he had a disengagement plan in place prior to his assassination. In several essays, the birth of propaganda in America in the nineteenth century will be addressed, as well as its full-blown expression in the following century as America entered into World War I. The uses of propaganda also figure in the Dreyfus Affair in France and the Armenian Genocide in Anatolia. Two films released simultaneously on the Armenian Genocide are critiqued; one of them was demonstrably a work of propaganda. An American Vice-President referred to his commander in chief as "by far the most devious man I ever met in my life"; the name of that president may come as a surprise. A little-known and underappreciated religious film epic entitled The Message is the subject of another essay. The authenticity of a painting by the famous Spanish artist Diego Velázquez is called into question in a detailed analysis of the painting and its history. Other essays will probe these questions: What was the controversy that served as a catalyst for the formation of the American political parties? What was the true rationale for fighting the American Civil War? Was our first modern blogger the philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche? What do Joseph Stalin and Vladimir Putin share in common? How is "Operation Paperclip" a microcosm of the Cold War? Several essays address Nazi Germany and Hitler's improbable rise to power. What were the circumstances of his early imprisonment and why was he released early? A little known story is how the love of mountains brought together Hitler and the filmmaker Leni Riefenstahl. Magda Goebbels was known as the First Lady of the Third Reich, but she secretly harboured support for the Jews and she was likely Jewish herself. The book is intended for lovers of history and for those who want to engage in the study of controversial topics.
