The Hepworth Family estate has shrunk. The family of eight has survived by selling off valuable land and sacking servants. None of the adult children are married.
Fenella Hepworth keeps the household functioning as the family's unofficial housekeeper. While her older brother gambles and her sisters flirt, she works. Then, Mr. Hepworth insists she attend a local dance as a break. Afterward, he asks if she's fallen in love. She says no. Her father surprises her with a request to marry his friend's son.
Victor Sloan is unwanted. A stutterer, his father never has time for him and thinks him a fool. He loses himself in his studies, inspired to invent machines that benefit society. However, he must step up as the Sloan heir and marry. With little social experience, he lets Mr. Sloan arrange a marriage.
Fenella travels north with only a maid in tow, ready to do her duty. However, a carriage accident robs her of recent memories. Past disappointments fade and Hope appears. Unsure, she and her maid switch places. Fenella hides among the Sloan servants as she works to recover her lost memories while clinging to Hope.
