Ibn Rushd, archaically Latinized as 'Averroes', was a twelfth century Andalusian Muslim polymath and jurist, who wrote about diverse subjects. A strong proponent of Aristotelianism, he attempted to restore the original teachings of Aristotle, while opposing the Neoplatonist tendencies of earlier Muslim thinkers. His philosophical masterpiece, 'The Decisive Treatise', critically examines the alleged tension between philosophy and religion, concluding that philosophy is not in opposition to Islamic thought. It represents an important and influential attempt to reconcile religion and philosophy in the mid-medieval period. Delphi's Medieval Library provides eReaders with rare and precious works of the Middle Ages, with noted English translations and the original texts.
