EVENTYR & DEN MAGISKE ENSOMHED

H.C. ANDERSENS HEMMELIGE LIV

— Politiken

"En kalejdoskopisk rejse ind i et komplekst menneske. Du vil aldrig se H.C. Andersen på samme måde igen."

— Weekendavisen

ENGLISH VERSION:

FAIRY TALE & THE MAGICAL SOLITUDE

H.C. ANDERSEN'S SECRET LIFE

"The fairy tale of a man who never fit in."

H.C. Andersen was not only a master of fairy tales—he was also a fairy tale in his own right. A man trapped in a mind that never rested, a soul so sensitive that the world felt like an endless storm of sensory impressions, rituals, and neuroses.

He counted steps. He cut his food into precise cubes. He never let his feet touch hotel floors without his slippers. A string around his wrist at night ensured that he was still connected to the world when the nightmares came. Anxiety was his shadow, and his loneliness was his eternal traveling companion.

From the slums of Odense to the castles of Europe, he wandered with his strangely folded letters and his far too many emotions. Letters filled with love so intense that they had to be edited by well-meaning hands before they were sent. Fairy tales where his own inner demons hid in the guises of ugly ducklings and little girls who froze to death.

This is not the story of Denmark's great fairy tale poet that you learned about in school. This is the story of the vulnerable, neurotic, brilliant man behind the pen. A man who loved too much, feared too much and wrote to survive.

"A literary miracle of a biography. Rarely has a book about Andersen felt so close to his mind—so brutal, so moving, so beautiful."

— Politiken

"A kaleidoscopic journey into a complex human being. You will never see H.C. Andersen the same way again."

— Weekendavisen

The question is what we ourselves choose to do with that knowledge.
