Waitress Jonah didn't come home one night after a shift at Pizza Time. She wasn't there the next morning. Or the next.
The Babylon Police Department think Jonah is a runaway, but her husband Charlie knows better. He's frustrated with a lack of progress and running desperately low on resources when he hires private investigator, Mercedes Masterson, to find his beloved wife. Mercedes takes on the missing person's case while struggling with her own personal identity — being a closeted bisexual woman.
Her investigation leads her to an old barber shop which has been converted into a small church called Holy Ghost Fire Temple. By appearances, it's an intimate community of members who want to please God. But appearances are not always what they seem, especially in religion.
Meanwhile, a weary Dean Ekron of the State Bureau has a growing list of missing persons on his desk including Jonah Keshandra Buckham. Another on his list is Jacqueline Nodine, his young niece.
Why did Jonah disappear? Did she leave her husband? Was she the victim of a crime? Why is there an uptick in missing persons in Babylon? And what does Holy Ghost Fire Temple Church have to do with any of this?
