In anticipation of attending his 50th high school reunion, Connor Stewart reflects on the memorable events of the past half century. He enjoys his time so much at the reunion that he plans a post-reunion hiking trip to Crete with five of his former high school track teammates. Their trip to Crete involves many adventures, including several scenic hikes in the Asterousia Mountains along the deep blue Libyan Sea, as well as unforgettable exposure to the hospitable Cretan culture, cuisine, and ancient history. From their home base in a whitewashed seaside cottage in Treis Ekklisies on the southern coast of Crete, they venture out to visit the capital city of Heraklion with its many shops and outside cafes, the Knossos Palace ruins of the Minoan civilization, the Roman ruins at Gortyn - the former Roman capital of Crete, Venetian Fortresses in Charakas and Rethymno, Ottoman mosques and baths in the harbor city of Chania, several olive grove plantations in the Messara Valley, the Koudoumas Greek Orthodox monastery, and the Cretan Holocaust Museumin Viannos, which highlights the atrocities to the Cretans during the World War II German Occupation of Crete. While visiting Crete, Connor and his former schoolmates also help investigate the murder of Steve Sanders, their popular high school classmate.
