Alice Zener, her son Freddie's Indomitable Lady, is turning ninety-five. Her children want to get everybody together for a celebration. Rather than looking forward to the party, Alice looks back: to her son Rick who was killed in Vietnam fifty years ago, to her husband Bill who has been dead twenty-five years, to her children, Sunny and Bunny, Amelia and Freddie, who they were when they were little, who they are now. Ninety-five years is a long time—a long time to love, to be loved, to be hurt, to hurt, to make memories, to let go or to hold on to resentments, to show mercy but not forget, to be a family. As the party gets closer, Alice sits, drinks her tea, and makes her dives into the Zener gene pool.
