Tenienta Alma Pérez of the Guardia Civil, together with Inspector Jefe José Blanco of the Policía Nacional investigate three homicides in Granada, while hubby Héctor makes some very unexpected discoveries in Perú.
Three Partido Popular politicans have been murdered in Granada. ¡Viva La Republica! signs are meant to implicate 'anarchists'. Are we back in the civil war? Is the clue a bit too obvious? Wouldn't corruption gone wrong be more likely? Jesús interviews a reluctant witness and finds some key evidence which he is keeping it to himself. Well, himself and Gheorghe, then Alma. They investigate.
Then another ex-PP politico is murdered in Pueblo and Carmen gets investigating. She too looks into possible corruption motives and finds connections which prove to be relevant to the Granada cases but don't help her case.
Héctor has got his archaeologist's hat on and heads for Kuélap in Perú to study Chachapoyas. He is hoping to uncover the Big One but instead uncovers his own past which changes his present and possibly his future. Alma is not happy.
In addition, what he uncovers are not artefacts so much as racism against the local Quechua and himself (who is, apparently, the most contemptible of beings, a mestizo.)
Jesús and Lampi are off to Madrid urgently to see if they can help the injured son of the lead archaeologist. Another story unfolds.
As does a brief look at the Spanish civil war and aftermath in connection with the Pueblo murder.
In LEC Juan tells us more about Billio, as Bill the Baphomet is now known, and his sidekick, Mario. What does this Clone want? Is he collecting DNA from toxic Life Forms? Does he have Juan's DNA?
We learn more about Jesús' parallel life and sad marriage in Israel. This is the life where Ana did not die and Jesús did not become a Healer.
