The title of the tabloid - Spectres and Stockings - said it all. And more importantly, it said who - Princess Penelope, whose grossly exaggerated tales of very unprincess-like behavior are burning up the newsstands all over Jestoria! It's all the ice-veined Lady Maldrith can chortle about. But Princess Penelope doesn't have time to stay in Jestoria, because the scammer demons are seeking an expedited resolution of their dispute in Hell's courts, and she, Bardly, Mr. Whiskers, Elphyra and Marigold have a legal fight on their hands! It's a good thing they have the services of Goreslop, Smokesnarl, and Spittlewretch, LLP to back them in their case...
Well, just Miss Smokesnarl, who's nursing a hangover after their 'client interview' at a Hellish speakeasy. But for one of the toughest trial lawyers Hell's ever seen, that ought to be enough, right? Well, it turns out that Fireworth Blackstone has been retained by the scammers - the lawyer who delivered Miss Smokesnarl her 1 in 37-1!
Faced with the prospect of avenging her first loss, Miss Smokesnarl nonetheless is woefully underprepared from an evidentiary point of view. But she does know Fireworth''s tactics - and those are to take one witness, and shred their credibility before the court. And unfortunately, Princess Penelope is in his demonic sights!
Princess Penelope can't get out of there fast enough, and she gets out of there, and fast - straight back to Jestoria via magical return charm. But it's straight into the Royal Court, where she's humiliated again by Lady Maldrith in front of her father, King Reginald. Bardly is furious about it, and does his level best to make her feel better about things. But she's not going to back down, especially when Miss Smokesnarl manages to get the trial relocated to Jestoria under some Hellish legalese! So, first things first - Bardly, Princess Penelope and the rest of the gang must get rid of the scammers once and for all, and to do that, they're going to need to head back to the jousting fields for a little... Celebrity Court.
Read this book, because Hell is a waiting room.
