Keldron, a brown colt born into the black stallion herd of mixed-race parents, faces a cruel fate even before taking his first breath. His deceased father, a white stallion from the desert, had mysteriously wandered away from his herd and was not present to witness his birth. The forbidden love between his father and Neama, a black mare, sparked the wrath of Bolt, the leader of the black stallion herd. In a duel fuelled by rage and resentment, Bolt kills Keldron's father and then claims Neama as his mate. However, when the colt is born, Bolt discovers that Keldron is not his offspring and has a lighter coat colour. Neama pleads for her son's life, swearing to send him away once he is old enough to seek out his father's lost white stallion herd in the desert. Keldron grows up under the oppressive weight of racism and his stepfather's cruel abuse. Keldron runs away from home, experiencing the effects of drugs to numb the pain, which initially seems an easy way out of the mental stress. However, an owl, a lion, and a vulture redirect his path. Keldron joins them on perilous adventures along the Mutsarvy River to unravel mysteries, confront social injustices, and search for the white stallion herd of his father. Yet, when Keldron finally reaches the herd, his long-awaited happiness is shattered as he must confront the dark secrets that drove his father to flee.
