In the presence of a trough,
it is difficult not to oink.
Donna Leon
Well, they all knew something was up when Carmen was offered the command of the Pueblo Guardia Civil. And now they know what. And we know. It was to do with a half ton of very valuable drugs. She stole them, of course.
But she didn't. Or if she did, they weren't really drugs. Still, Guardia HQ accuses her and prepares a fake report to prove it.
Meanwhile, the 1936-39 Spanish Civil War is being refought in the village of Almendral when the bones of eleven bodies executed by the Guardia Civil in 1940 are discovered. A twelfth is nearly added when Pepe of the Guardia tries to interfere with the mourning. Jesús finds a pathway out of the conflict.
Cunning comes into all of this. A lot of cunning, on the part of Carmen and the Guardia men of Pueblo when the Riot Squad turn up to take the bones away, presumably to provide yet another fake report to prove they are not what they obviously are.
So, who was behind the drugs which Carmen is accused of diverting? Cui bono? The usual suspects. There I've given it away and saved you having to read all this nonsense. Move along.
But... You've missed a fast-paced, thrill-packed mystery with bad guys, good guys, Healing, cunning, Love, history of the Civil War, and amazing team work. And news from the hereafter aka Love Energy Central. And a ghost! You'll miss the ghost. Oh well...
