An ancient race of wolves known as the Ittaries lived in the rural areas of the world, unbeknownst to human kind. The Ittaries were an intelligent race, possessing different talents and abilities, but the one common power they shared was called the Gift of the Ittaries. The Gift was something granted to humans on the verge of death, resulting in the passing of the wolf so the human could live. The process was a fusion of the souls of the Ittaires and human, transferring all talents and abilities—even granting the power for the human to change their shape into the wolf who gave them the Gift.

The protagonist, Christopher Blythe, is enjoying a typical night out with his two closest friends when he encounters a strange man, then all sense of normalcy in his life is gone forever. After opening a box he had no recollection of, he is plagued with flashbacks of a year of life lost from his memory. His memories take a strange twist, and he comes to learn that an impossible ability he forgot having was real.

Without any say in the matter, Christopher is caught in the middle of a war—a war that started long before he was born into the world, perpetuated by an Ittaries known as the Dark Wolf.
